Inboard vs. Outboard: Pump Bearing Basics

Understanding basic rotating equipment terms helps to troubleshoot and communicate about issues. When a mechanic tells you there is an issue with the motor outboard bearing, it helps to be able to picture it in your mind right away.

What Bearings Do

Bearings maintain the position of the rotating shaft. They must be able to absorb forces to prevent misalignment. Forces can be radial or axial. Radial forces are perpendicular to the shaft. Axial (thrust) forces are parallel to the shaft.
